Ken Bates bought Chelsea and their big debts for just £1 in April 1982. Bates, who owned at least 29% of Chelsea Village moved away from being dependent on the football club as the main source of income and started investing in properties. He is staying as chairman as part of the deal with Abramovich. Chelsea Village had debts of almost £100m, it includes 2 hotels, 8 restaurants, a travel company and a night club |

1990-: Worked as a fitness trainer at various clubs
1992: Worked with Bobby Robson as a translator at Sporting Lisbon later becoming his assistant coach.
1994-1996: Moved to Porto with Robson as second assistant and later first assistant winning two league titles,one Portuguese Cup and Super Cup.
1996: Again with Robson joined Barcelona winning the Super Cup ,the King’s Cup,and the European Cup Winners’ Cup .
1997-2000: Worked under Louis van Gaal at Barcelona as a scout,won two league titles and other trophies.
2000: First manager role at Benfica,disagreament with the club president Joao Vale caused him to quit.
2001: In charge at Uniao Leiria lifting the team into the top five of the Portuguese league.
2002: In January with Leiria in third place, moved to Porto, regaining ground and taking the team up to third position in the Portuguese League
2003: Won the UEFA Cup, the Portuguese Cup and League in his first full season in charge of Porto.
2004: Won Portuguese Super Cup and retained second succesive League title but lost in the Portuguese cup , later won the Champion League.
